Saree Costa

My name is Saree Costa and I’m a transfer student from Chaffey College, majoring in Computer Information Systems. This is my first quarter and I’m thrilled to be at Cal Poly Pomona. I am currently a Kellogg Honors Student and a member of Cal Poly SWIFT. I work part-time in the computer and telecommunications industry and am constantly learning new technologies.

I have always found it imperative to help others since I was young, and have volunteered often in my local communities. At the Pomona fair, I have led workshops at the art gallery for over six years. Helping students struggling in math from elementary to college level has also been rewarding.  Recently, I have volunteered to teach computers and technology to students who didn’t have the opportunity to attend the computer lab at a local elementary school due to budget cuts. I’m confident everyone can help meliorate the lives of others in some way.

Anthony Donohoo

I am a 25-year-old Civil Engineering student born and raised in Southern California. I love the lifestyle, diversity, and (especially) the weather in Southern California. In the summer of 2010, I interned with the Riverside County Flood Control and Water Conservation District. Among myriad other things, I learned that I wanted to dedicate my career to the preservation and protection of our disappearing water supply in this area. For this reason, I want to earn a Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering after completing my Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering in Spring 2012. I hope to make an impact in recharging and purifying our groundwater aquifers to provide clean water for us and future generations.

Louis Huerta

This is my third year as a Business-Accounting major. I try my best to stay involved on and off campus as much as I can while keeping good grades. I am the oldest sibling in my family and the first to attend a University. For all those in the same boat, keep up the hard work. I am an active member and executive for Delta Delta Co Ed Fraternity, a member of Mexican American Student Association (MASA), and a member of Latino Business Student Association (LBSA). I want to thank all those who have contributed and made Matt’s Run possible every year. Congratulations to all who received a scholarship and lastly thank you very much in considering me for a scholarship this year. It is greatly appreciated.

James D. Marin

James D. Marin is a Senior in the Human Nutrition and Food Science Department in the College of Agriculture, pursuing an emphasis on Dietetics. James will graduate with honors and hopes to start the Dietetic Internship at Cal Poly Pomona. Currently, James is the president of Phi Upsilon Omicron, a nationally accredited honor society; he also is the “Leader of Healthy Living” in a local non-profit organization that engages the community to learn about health and nutrition. Once finished with school and the internship, James will become a Registered Dietitian working with the population to promote healthy communities and lifestyles.

Joannasuong H. Luu

I am a 6th year here at Cal Poly Pomona. My major is in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Mathematics. I love playing tennis on my free time and study hardcore when I don’t. I work two paid jobs at the moment and volunteer at a church on the weekends. I teach 3rd graders how to speak, read and write in the Vietnamese language. I love what I do there since it gives me a sense that I am making a difference. For this reason, I major is Liberal Studies. I want to make a difference for my students later on in life, not just during their time in my class. Everyone asks me why I want to become a teacher when teachers do not get paid as much and that they have to face so many criticisms from other fields. I think that teaching is because of the pay but because of the reward of being able to teach someone something that will change the student’s life. I think that teaching is a gift that a person later on acquires not something you are born with. I feel that the best reward as a teacher is having the students come back and saying that because of what I taught them, they learned and were able to do so much with that knowledge. After I receive my teaching credentials, I want to teach mathematics in the any setting I can because I feel teaching is not something I can chose but something I am guided towards. I hope all will go well.

Christopher Osuala

I am senior Electrical Engineering major at Cal Poly Pomona. I am the second child and first son of four kids to Dr. Christopher and Tina Osuala. They instilled the importance of morals and the value of education in me at an early age that I have stayed true to since then. I was on National Honor Roll all four years of high school, and was mentioned in the “Who is Who Among High Students” in 2007. My accolades have yet to stop in college; I have received numerous scholarships and have maintained above a 3.0 since my admittance to Cal Poly.

Though I am thoroughly immersed in my academics, I am extremely passionate about helping my community. I live by the motto, “be the change you wish to see in the world.” As far as extracurricular involvement, I have held the position of Executive Assistant of the B.S.U. (Black Student Union), Academic Excellence Chair and Vice President of N.S.B.E. (National Society of Black Engineers), Black History Month Chair, and the President of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Phi Lambda chapter. I am honored to have received this opportunity by the Matt’s Run Scholarship organization.
